Guam – Department of Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs Tony Babauta has submitted his resignation to DOI Secretary Ken Salazar. The resignation comes in the midst of an ongoing Office of Inspector General investigation that was launched back in November into Babauta’s travel and some DOI awards he allegedly approved.

DOI Deputy Director of Communications Blake Androff confirms with KUAM that Babauta’s resignation is effective February 1. Androff did not explain the reason for the resignation and Babauta has not responded to inquiries regarding the ongoing federal probe or resignation.

Babauta has been on administrative leave during the investigation.

Office of Inspector General representatives were recently on island and met with Governor Eddie Calvo and University of Guam President Dr. Robert Underwood to discuss the investigation.
